Sophie has expressed disappointment at Tesco's announcement that they will be outsourcing 190 financial processing jobs from Cardiff North to Bangalore in India.
Sophie said: "This is an extremely disappointing announcement by Tesco. It is not long ago that the company opened a new call centre in Cardiff. They are offering retraining for the 190 people who work in financial processing to work in customer care — but that will not alleviate the worst of the worry and the distress which will have been caused to workers here in Cardiff North.
"I know that Julie Morgan MP has immediately been in touch with Tesco to ask about the impact on pay and conditions of these changes. I hope that Tesco will respond positively.
"Tesco must seek to work sustainably in the communities where it is located. That is true of both the proposed Tesco Extra stores, such as the one recently successfully campaigned against on Birchgrove Road, and for the larger administrative centres too. Sustainable communities and job security for individuals go hand-in-hand, and I hope that Tesco will remember this as it goes ahead with this disappointing outsourcing plan over the next 12 to 18 months."
