Pupils in Eglwys Wen Infant and Junior School, Whitchurch and Cefn Onn, Llanishen are making their school a greener, cleaner, more environmentally friendly place to be, thanks to the Welsh Assembly Government's Eco-Schools programme said Whitchurch Councillor and Sophie Howe and UK Environment Minister David Miliband today (Friday 10th November).
Assembly Candidate Sophie Howe also took the opportunity to encourage schools in Cardiff to enter a Climate Change Challenge competition which could net their school a £1,000 prize.
The Assembly Government funded scheme encourages school children to think how individual actions can affect the environment and our climate.
Sophie said:
"I am proud to say that 107 of schools in Cardiff are taking part in the eco-schools scheme and are leading the way on tackling climate change in Wales.
"Pupils in schools like Eglwys Wen and Cefn Onn have got together, assessed the impact they're making on the environment and climate, and worked out ways they can change.
"Tree planting, growing organic vegetable, setting targets to increase the number of pupils walking to school are just some of the ideas pupils have come up with in the schools.
The teachers at both schools are right to be proud of the initiative the children have shown. Climate change affects us all and these young people are showing us today that we need to take it seriously.
"Welsh Labour if fully behind the scheme and I think that it's vitally important to educate and involve the younger generation when it comes to tackling climate change.
"I would also like to see schools in Cardiff taking up the Welsh Climate Change Challenge.
"This is a competition for 11-18 year olds who are invited to turn their hand to journalism and write a report on climate change issues to win £1,000 for their school.
"A winner and two runners-up will receive a cash prize for an environmental project at their schools, and book tokens for themselves.
"All you have to do is work with four school friends to create a news report telling us what you think about climate change in Wales. You could create the front page of a newspaper, write a web page, or record a TV or radio news story.
"You can request a pack for your school or find out more by emailing [email protected]. The closing datefor the competition is December 14, 2006."
