Residents on Caerphilly Road and surrounding areas are experiencing traffic chaos as a result of road works associated with the housing development on the AWE site. Residents have complained that public transport networks are disrupted and the area is the subject of traffic chaos. Labour Assembly Candidate for Cardiff North and Cardiff Councillor Sophie Howe took the issue to the Council chamber where she demanded action to alleviate the problem from the Liberal Democrat Executive Member for Transport.
Sophie's question to the Executive Member was:
Are you aware that road works associated with the development of the AWE site on Caerphilly Road are scheduled to be ongoing for approximately 20 weeks. As a result of this there is a gap of virtually a full kilometre between bus stops for services inbound to UHW and the City Centre, with no bus stop at all over the whole stretch between Ty GLas and Maes-Y-Coed Road. Would you agree that this is unacceptable and agree to liaise with Cardiff Bus and Stagecoach, the developers and Traffic Transportation Officers to identify a short-term solution to rectify this situation?
Councillor Elgan Morgan replied stating that the temporary loss of the bus stop is regrettable and that the space between the stops was larger than he would have liked. The stops were taking out in order to allow road widening to occur safely but there it is not possible to identify temporary alternative bus stops. One of the two buses that used the stops had been relocated and the other is supposed to be brought back in 10 weeks time.
In a newsletter to local residents Sophie has said:
"It is unacceptable that local residents are having to put up with this level of disruptions. Many people rely on catching buses from these stops to get to work and this should have been considered before works of this scale was started. I will be following this up with the Council to make sure that the public transport network is restored in this area as quickly as possible."
