At the Meeting of the Council before Christmas Labour Councillor and Assembly Candidate for Cardiff North, Sophie Howe asked the Liberal Democrat run Council to give an assurance to elderly people across the city that meals on wheels would be delivered throughout the Christmas period.
In a question to Liberal Democrat Executive Member for Social Services Sophie raised concerns that it was likely that due to Christmas falling on the weekend with bank holidays on Monday and Tuesday, elderly people would be left without a visit or a hot meal for four days.
Sophie said:
“We must not forget OAP’s in Cardiff over Christmas. Many elderly people in Cardiff North and across the City rely not only on the hot meals provided by the Meals on Wheels Services but also on a visit from the staff who deliver them. These staff can check on the well being of elderly people and can provide some company over the Christmas period. I am concerned that there could be up to five days where elderly and vulnerable people are left to fend for themselves.”
She continued:
“I am asking the Council to give a commitment that it won’t be silent days and nights for the elderly this Christmas”
